IB Risk

IB Risk recruits interns into two key areas:

  • Credit Risk
  • Market Risk

Read about these business groups in our Business Areas section.

What to expect

As an intern, you'll be assigned to a small team in IB Risk which could focus on a specific industry such as Natural Resources, or have a specialist role such as Portfolio Research.

Your internship will start with a week of Investment Banking, Accounting, and IB Risk focused training, after which you could find yourself working on various tasks such as:

  • Meeting a prospective hedge fund client, writing an analysis of the risks of their particular business model and strategies, and along with senior colleagues, forming an opinion on whether we should do business with them
  • Working on a live transaction, which involves the modelling of financial covenants, analysing loan documentation and liaising with other syndicate members (banks and other institutional investors)
  • Making an holistic assessment of the development of the petrochemicals and base metals markets
  • Reviewing the potential impact on J.P. Morgan's portfolio and market risk changes to the way commodities are traded and regulated

Whatever assignments you work on, you'll be exposed to senior professionals early on and you'll be expected to form, articulate and defend your own opinions.

You'll benefit from the support of a dedicated junior and senior member of staff to help you integrate into your team and to answer any questions you might have throughout the summer. Through organised lunches and social events, you'll also have the opportunity to meet colleagues from all areas of the IB Risk department.

In addition, you can expect to learn about other parts of the Investment Bank via a series of breakfasts and networking sessions. At these events senior members of staff in various departments will give you a snap-shot of their business, or highlight areas of interest in the industry.

Throughout the programme, you're encouraged to develop your understanding of the wide variety of roles within this business, as well as build both professional and personal networks within the bank.
