Read India

2008 Asia Give-It-Away winner
Recipient of $30,000

With the number of children in India unable to read, write and perform basic arithmetic reaching a staggering high, Pratham's Read India campaign aims to dramatically improve standards of literacy for millions of India's children aged 6-14. It works with teachers inside schools, and with volunteers and anganwadi workers at home and in the community. Thanks to your votes, Read India was the winner of Asia's Give-It-Away campaign in 2008, receiving a $30,000 donation from J.P. Morgan.

First developed in 2002, Pratham's Read India program helps improve the quality of basic skills learning through accelerated reading techniques, and is now running in over 300 districts of India. The organization provides age appropriate and relevant teaching and learning materials to aid and enhance existing school systems and teaching methods.

J.P. Morgan's Give-It-Away donation directly sponsored Read India's creation of "Reading Cards". These thick, A4-size cards, with a blend of images and words representing different subjects, are designed to help children read fluently. They are a preferred means of learning new topics by children of all ages, and help to widen the horizons of those using them by taking learning beyond the textbooks. The money we donated has enabled Read India to produce good quality, attractive and engaging reading materials to reach the children that participate in its programs, a total of over 20 million children annually since 2007.

Mallika Singh, from Pratham commented:

"The J.P. Morgan Give-It-Away campaign has not only created awareness, but also helped achieve a sustainable change in the weaker sections of society, setting an example in terms of true social responsibility. The donation was pivotal to the creation of material that forms the basis of the success of our accelerated learning methodology, impacting the millions of children that participate in our programs across 21 states in India. Thank you for your support."
