Event details

Event date: April 12-16, 2009
Location: J.P. Morgan London offices

Who is eligible to apply?
Spring Week: Inside the Industry is open to undergraduate students, from any degree discipline, studying in the UK, Eire and Continental Europe and graduating in 2012*.

Can I apply to more than one J.P. Morgan pre-internship programme?
Unfortunately you can make only one application to our pre-internship programmes (Spring Week: Inside the Industry, Spring Week: Experience the Markets or Winning Women: Inside the Industry). So make sure you apply to the one which offers the best opportunities, given your skills, previous experiences and career aspirations.

Spring Week: Inside the Industry is an introduction to the career opportunities within the investment bank. If you're set on joining our Sales, Trading or Research business area and looking to immerse yourself in life on the trading floor, we suggest you look at Spring Week: Experience the Markets. If you're a women set on joining the industry, looking to build networks and contacts within the investment bank and need further clarification about which business area you're most suited to, think about applying to Winning Women: Inside the Industry.

How do I apply?
First, you'll need to complete an online application form. This involves uploading your CV, as well as a statement of motivation for joining the programme. Download our sample CV for hints and tips on CV writing. And make sure you prepare your motivational statement in advance, clearly demonstrating why you should be considered for the programme.

Who are we looking for?
Competition for Spring Week: Inside the Industry is fierce, so preparation is key. We are looking for students with a passion and enthusiasm for working in the Investment Banking industry. Do your research; keep up-to-date on recent financial news and general current affairs. Ask yourself - do I know what differentiates J.P. Morgan from other investment banks?  What do I really know about J.P. Morgan and its culture?  Do I know why J.P. Morgan has been in the press recently?

Throughout the interview process, you'll be asked to demonstrate your motivation for participating in Spring Week: Inside the Industry and why you wish to pursue a career in an investment bank.

Key requirements include:

  • Genuine interest and knowledge of the financial markets
  • Strong academic record with an expected minimum 2:1 degree or equivalent
  • Fluency in English is essential, however an additional European language is a plus
  • Strong numerical skills
  • Graduating in 2012

Other skills and competencies are:

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to build relationships
  • Proven team working abilities
  • Self-confidence, drive and ambition

What's the interview process?
Once you have submitted your online application, successful candidates will have a 30 minute telephone interview to ascertain their suitability and motivation for the programme. Offers will be made within two weeks and feedback will be available to all those who are interviewed.

Do I need to know which business area I'm interested in prior to the event?
Obviously, we expect you to have a basic understanding of our firm and industry, but the programme is designed to fully brief you on the detail behind our business areas and the career paths they offer. These businesses include:

  • Asset Management
  • IB Risk
  • Investment Banking
  • Sales, Trading & Research

It's best to start the programme with an open mind. You may join determined to pursue a career in one area, and leave thinking that you're better suited to another.

What does the programme consist of?
Throughout the week, you can expect to participate in the following:

  • Business specific case studies
  • Interactive sessions
  • Junior mentoring
  • Presentations
  • Recruiter workshop for intern application and interview hints and tips
  • Senior networking
  • Social events
  • Workshadowing afternoon

Will you cover my expenses?
Your travel expenses will be reimbursed and overnight accommodation will also be provided if you live outside of the M25 area of London.

If I'm not accepted onto a pre-internship programme, will it affect my application for a summer internship?
Not at all. We get a huge number of applications for a very limited number of places, so don't be disheartened if your application is unsuccessful. All students have the opportunity to make a fresh application to our summer internship programmes the following year.

* Please note, your application will only be considered if you are finishing your studies in 2012.
