“Stay humble, stay hungry."
That was the advice Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn gave to our 2020 interns, who experienced the program in a unique way.
In a whirlwind five weeks, we welcomed our interns into the world of JPMorgan Chase, as they worked remotely for the first time ever. During their time, some interns had the chance to help nonprofit organizations through Tech for Social Good projects and were able to develop relationships with peers and mentors across the firm.
They also heard from inspiring speakers like Vonn, who celebrated the group's success and hard work. Additionally, she answered questions and shared tips from her own journey about facing and overcoming adversity.
“What matters is putting your best foot forward every day, making the commitment and having the willingness to learn," she said.
Despite the change of circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were thrilled to see how the interns adapted, thrived and built a community virtually. We checked in with some of our interns around the world to hear more about their experience.

How were you able to connect with your fellow team members? Virtual lunches were the new norm for my mates and I. We would bring our own meals and unwind over Zoom about any topics under the sun. We even had our own virtual ‘Friday Night’ plans just to catch up after the long week!
What was the highlight of the experience for you? The highlight of my experience would be the genuine and inclusive culture that J.P. Morgan prides themself in. Despite the busiest of schedules, people here are always at their best and most willing. There was never a day that you would feel left out.
Looking back on the last five weeks, what are you most proud of? I am most proud of what the team and I had accomplished for our project. Through the early mornings and late nights, we delivered what we believe is the best representation of our 5-weeks’ worth of experience and effort into a single deliverable.
What was the biggest lesson learned for you during your internship? My greatest lesson and reminder from this internship is to never settle that hunger for knowledge. There is so much to learn and learning should never stop. Always be curious to want to know more.

How were you able to connect with your fellow team members? I was able to connect with my fellow team members through a variety of opportunities given by J.P. Morgan such as virtual game nights, volunteering, and other online social events. Working on our Social Good projects provided another way to get to know my teammates through the many hours of collaboration.
What was the highlight of the experience for you? The highlight of my experience was definitely getting to know fellow coworkers and using my passion for technology to give back to the community I’ve grown up in. I think the way the virtual experience was set up provided a unique opportunity for us to network with employees around the world in addition to providing volunteering opportunities through our Social Good project.
Looking back on the last five weeks, what are you most proud of? I’m most proud of the way my team worked together through every challenge. We had a smaller group than most of the other interns I talked to and one of our group mates was in a power outage for about half a week (amongst other obstacles), yet we successfully implemented a unique solution in about two weeks time.
What was the biggest shift in perspective for you during your internship? My biggest shift of perspective happened the more I talked to people at many different branches about the ways they are implementing AI & Machine Learning at Chase. I have always had a big focus in AI in manufacturing growing up, so learning that we aren’t just a bank opened my eyes to some cool ways I can transfer my knowledge in manufacturing to the financial industry.

How were you able to connect with your fellow team members? I was able to successfully connect with my team members through various mediums such as Zoom while also maintaining an open door policy for any questions/support needed.
What was the highlight of the experience for you? The highlight of this experience for me personally was meeting and collaborating with various people from different backgrounds to create a real world solution, and learning more about their personal and professional journeys along the way.
Looking back on the last five weeks, what are you most proud of? I am most proud of the perseverance shown not only from my team and I, but everyone at JPMC that was able to continue working effectively during these unprecedented times. Perseverance was shown throughout the entire 5 weeks by staying productive and meeting deadlines regardless of the extenuating circumstances.
What was the biggest shift in perspective for you during your internship? The biggest shift in perspective for me was the perspective of knowledge in the workplace. I once believed that the learning stopped once you graduated from college. Going through this internship, I found that the workplace environment involves constant learning of something new and improving on existing skills.

How were you able to connect with your fellow team members? Mostly we communicated via email and Bloomberg chat. Everyone was extremely accessible and easy to reach out to, despite not seeing each other in person. Scheduled roundtable discussions with senior members of the team allowed me to get exposure to different people in the business. Daily morning calls with the whole Asia Pacific team ensured that everyone was updated on market news and company updates.
What was the highlight of the experience for you? The highlight of the experience was meeting different people in the business. As an intern, it was extremely easy to reach out and schedule coffee chats with everyone on the team who were very receptive and supportive. It was very interesting to hear about the different career paths people have taken and get a perspective into the day-to-day, even via a virtual internship. Another highlight would be the intern scavenger hunt where I got to interact with and get to know my teammates from different divisions and parts of Asia.
Looking back on the last five weeks, what are you most proud of? I am most proud of our group project stock pitch. Throughout the program, my group and I pitched various different stocks and refined our best idea into a presentation at the end. As a group, we operated smoothly and worked very well with each other. In the end, we managed to incorporate all our research and feedback received together to form a successful pitch.
What was the biggest shift of perspective for you during your internship? The biggest shift in perspective for me was how much teamwork is involved in one pitch and how integrated the entire business is. From research to trading to peers within sales, all aspects come together to help form, support, and refine your view.
