Building Data Technology Applications That Must Deliver

Looking to technology to keep pace with demand

I head a funds data technology group that works closely with the trading desk and delivers information and business solutions quickly and accurately to our customers. It’s a very time-sensitive business with a low tolerance for data inaccuracies within a complex risk and trading business function. A key technology challenge we faced was replacing a legacy application to better support our clients. Working with the business, the technology team defined new application functionality, design, and delivery, and replaced the old technology with a new strategic application. The replacement has provided significant business growth, horizontal scaling (7x bandwidth) and improved time to market.

From India to Glasgow, a work culture rich with opportunity

I completed my Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Science from Rajasthan University in Jaipur, India. I joined JPMorgan Chase in Mumbai, India, in 2012 as a Business Analyst through a referral by a professional connection on LinkedIn. I transferred to the firm’s Glasgow Centre as part of an internal mobility opportunity. I’ve moved across different technology teams and various assets classes, like Equities, Index, ETF (exchange-traded fund) and have gotten promoted along the way. Mobility is one of the best things the firm offers and promotes.

A diverse group of communities and leadership opportunities

I served as AsPIRE (Asian, Pacific Islander & Middle East Reaching for Excellence) community site lead in Glasgow and was then promoted to AsPIRE EMEA co-chair. When I look five years back and compare today, I can proudly state that we have done significant work in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, which has helped attract more diverse talent and give equal opportunity to everyone. Celebrating cultural differences helps us to counter unconscious bias, provides networking opportunities and support channels to help employees discuss and raise issues. I also take advantage of speaker events to help with my professional development and improve leadership opportunities.

Career advice: Connect, empathize and collaborate

The technology landscape changes frequently. The key to success is to stay connected and make allies across different groups. Show empathy towards others and help create a more collaborative environment.

On a personal note

I was born and raised in Behror, a small town within Rajasthan, India and moved to a hostel in a different city at the age of 13, due to limited educational opportunity in my hometown. I enjoy living in Scotland. My favorite pastime is spending time with family, cycling with my son and walking with friends.
