July 2020

It wasn't what any of us were expecting at the start of the year, but no matter the circumstances we wanted to make sure our interns had the most inspiring and eye-opening summer experience with JPMorgan Chase. To ensure everyone's safety, this meant our internships would be entirely virtual for the first time ever. We checked in with some of our interns around the world to get their early impressions after their first week with us.

George | Asset & Wealth Management, North America

Morehouse College - B.A. in Business Administration (Finance Concentration)

What’s your favorite quarantine hobby? Working on my cooking skills.

Now that Week 1 is done, what was your first impression of the virtual internship experience? Not knowing exactly what a virtual experience would be like, I was surprised at how engaging and interactive the first week was. There was so much knowledge to gain from seasoned professionals in just the first day alone!

What was the highlight of Week 1 for you? Besides seeing the other interns on my computer screen, hearing from John Duffy, Executive Director Asset & Wealth Management North America, was my highlight. I was excited to see someone in that position take time to talk about his extensive experience and interact with us.

What are you excited to experience during your internship? I am most excited to learn with my peers and from my manager. The work environment is truly a team atmosphere and everybody finds time to help you.

What’s your favorite quarantine hobby? Painting!

Now that Week 1 is done, what was your first impression of the virtual internship experience? As a returning summer intern at JPMC, I am extremely grateful to be working at a firm that takes a challenge by its horns and excels at providing its employees with a first class experience. Our firm has been a great example in highlighting the importance of continuing internship programs and other recruiting initiatives as an essential business and talent growth strategy. The time and effort put into making this virtual experience successful was very evident!

What was the highlight of Week 1 for you? Week 1 was packed with many exciting trainings, information sessions, and social events! I enjoyed meeting the other interns in my pod, attending the deep dives for individual BRGs (Business Resource Group – e.g. Women on the Move, Advancing Black Leaders), and even participating a yoga session. It is clear that this virtual platform has created even more avenues for us to connect with one another!

What are you excited to experience during your internship? As Lauren Tyler has expressed in our recent Speaker Series, this is a great time to take advantage of networking opportunities in unexpected ways. I am looking forward to connecting with other employees in order to dive into the amazing culture at JPMorgan Chase, even as we work from home.

Nanako | Markets, Japan

Waseda University (Exchange program at Sciences Po Paris) - Liberal Arts

What’s your favorite quarantine hobby? Having drinks with friends over a Zoom call.

What was your first impression of the virtual internship experience? There were a lot more interns across Asia than I imagined, and I was amazed at how diverse the interns were. I was pleased and excited to be able to chat to members of J.P. Morgan outside of Tokyo as well.

What was the highlight so far for you? I began without an economics background, but thanks to the training provided to me I now have a lot more financial knowledge. Finishing the exam and looking over how I was able to answer questions I couldn’t before, felt pleasing.

What are you excited to experience during your internship? Definitely the culture of J.P. Morgan!  I am excited to see how members of the firm interact and I very much hope this continues during the desk rotations.

Rebecca | Asset & Wealth Management, North America

Indiana University – Finance, International Business

What’s your favorite quarantine hobby? Hiking in Colorado & cooking vegetarian meals.

Now that Week 1 is done, what was your first impression of the virtual internship experience? My first impression of the virtual internship was very positive. I feel that as interns, we are lucky to be able to use technology to connect with people from all over the firm and the world in a way that might not have been possible if we were physically in the office. I am excited to utilize the program to gain valuable knowledge in the next few weeks.

What was the highlight of Week 1 for you? There have been many highlights so far but one in particular is hearing from senior leadership and listening to other summer analysts ask thought provoking questions. I love gaining insight from other people’s experiences and am excited to take what I learn and use it in my personal and professional life.

What are you excited to experience during your internship? I hope to gain more exposure as to how JP Morgan Chase runs its business through collaborating with my team. I also want to continue building relationships with people who work in different lines of business throughout the firm. I feel this will help me figure out my strengths and find ways to best use those strengths as I begin my career.

Garrett | Global Finance & Business Management, North America

Temple University -  Major: Finance, Minor: Supply Chain Management

What’s your favorite quarantine hobby? Playing tennis!

What was your first impression of the virtual internship experience? On day one of the internship when we opened up the orientation Zoom, I have to admit I was a little nervous about how efficient the entire online platform would work. After a few minutes of listening to the speakers, my nerves completely disappeared and were replaced with enthusiasm to get the next five weeks started.

What was the highlight so far for you? The highlight of the entire internship so far is the Speaker Series with Jamie Dimon. Being able to get his perspective on the current state of the world in terms of economics, social justice, and J.P. Morgan Chase itself was extremely enlightening.

What are you excited to experience during your internship? Throughout this internship, there is nothing I am more excited about than working with my team of fellow interns, mentors, managers, and project advisors. After just two weeks of working alongside this insightful and talented group of people, I am able to see the potential we all have and I am excited to see our finished product at the end of these five weeks.

Gary Ngai | Corporate Analyst Development Program, Hong Kong

The University of Hong Kong - International Business and Global Management

What’s your favorite quarantine hobby? Singing!

What was your first impression of the virtual internship experience? I honestly thought that a virtual internship would take away the opportunity to learn from seniors and engage in tasks. However, the superb arrangements and resources made available to us has enabled me to work as though I was physically in the office.

What was the highlight so far for you? The highlight for me so far is the opportunity to talk with and learn from various seniors working in different lines of businesses. They were all so enthusiastic and welcoming, that it made me more motivated to learn from them. Perks of virtual experience is that you can reach out and engage in more ‘coffee chats’ with different people!

What are you excited to experience during your internship? I am very excited to be able to be able to experience the inclusive and welcoming culture within JPMorgan Chase, for example having the opportunity to join the BRG’s in Hong Kong.
